Asian maritime traditions meet psychedelia — Asian Spice House unveil new album Cosmic Rowers

Seoul-based psychedelic band Asian Spice House will release their second full-length album Cosmic Rowers on April 3. The album will be available digitally via Eastern Standard Sounds.
Marking their return two years after their debut, Cosmic Rowers presents a deeper and more defined psychedelic sound. Using the imagery of the ocean and waves, the album explores themes of desire and inner longing, portraying the flow of life, transformation, and the connection between humans and nature.

Featuring 11 tracks, the album draws from maritime musical elements found across cultures shaped by the Asian monsoon. Blending dub, electronic elements, and diverse rhythmic structures, the band creates a rich and multidimensional sound. Inspired by various Asian maritime folk traditions—including Korean sea shanties, the Japanese work song “Sōran Bushi,” Thai boat festival music, and folk songs of the Li people from Hainan, China—the album reinterprets these influences through a contemporary lens. The addition of 1970s–80s vintage textures evokes a sense of nostalgia while further expanding the band’s psychedelic sonic palette.
The final three tracks feature reggae and dub producer Tehiun, who reimagines the originals through a dub lens. This collaboration represents an experimental extension of the band’s psychedelic language, incorporating the spatial aesthetics of dub as a core compositional element. Treating space as an instrument, delay and reverb create layered dimensionality, while bass-driven minimalism and cyclical rhythms continuously deconstruct and reassemble the band’s sound. Through this process, psychedelic textures and dub sensibilities merge organically, forming a fluid sonic landscape that drifts between oceanic depth and cosmic expanse. The album is mastered by Christopher Longwood, known for his work with Khruangbin.
Asian Spice House is a Seoul-based band known for exploring musical elements from across Asia while blending psychedelic rock, world music, electronic, and dub into a distinctive sonic identity. Their 2023 debut album Nabulhaenghaeng reinterpreted the traditional Korean folk song “Gakseori Taryeong,” combining psychedelic rock with electronic and dub influences. The band has since gained recognition through international activities, including an invitation to Japan’s Soul Beat Asia festival in 2025, winning the Bronze Prize at the Gwangju World Busking Festival, and being selected for the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s emerging artist program. In January 2026, they were also officially invited to the Okinawa Music Lane Showcase Festival, positioning themselves as a rising act within the Asian roots and fusion music scene.
To celebrate the release, Asian Spice House will hold a showcase concert on April 18 at Cosmos in Hongdae, Seoul.
